Welcome to Swedenburg Winery! We hope that not only will you enjoy our wines, but also our friendly staff and stunning scenic countryside.

Swedenburg Winery is located on Historic Valley View Farm (c. 1762). Wayne and Juanita Swedenburg, came to this farm in 1980, both on the heels of retirement from government service. Along with their son Marc, the Swedenburgs planted the entire vineyard, mostly by hand, sometimes by the light of the family pickup truck at night! After many years of hard work, the family enjoyed the first "crush" in 1987, and have been producing fine wines ever since!

Valley View Farm, home of Swedenburg Estate Vineyard, is easily accessible on U.S. Rt. 50 one mile east of Middleburg, VA. Valley View farm has been a working farm for over 240 years, raising crops such as wheat and corn, and livestock such as sheep and today registered Angus cattle and premium Vinifera grapes.

As part of a royal grant in Colonial time, the land was first leased from Bryan Fairfax for an annual rent of four pounds. The lessee was requited "To build a dwelling house 20 feet long and 16 feet wide and other such houses as his way of husbandry may require." The original "Patent House" is now a section of the Swedenburg family home.

The transition from the 18th century to the 21st continues, ever melding the old and new. Producing quality products in harmony with Mother Nature is always our goal.

We open the tasting room and invite guests to come and experience the wines along with the beauty of Virginia. The family wants our visitors to enjoy themselves while at the winery and its tasting room. We recently installed tables for our guests that have purchased wines and choose to enjoy a glass or so. We want you to enjoy yourselves though please remember the barns and the housing compound down the lane is a private residence that is restricted to our family’s use and solitude. Please be reminded the farm is a working agriculture venture so if something looks like a simple field it is likely orchard grass and clover for winter feed production or a pasture with our cattle. We need the land so let’s respect it.

Our Staff:

We are fortunate to have the best folks working at Swedenburg. Cheryl Kosmann, who is our tasting room manager, has been with us over a year. She is a long time resident of Middleburg and enjoys sharing things to do in the village and suggesting many fabulous places to have a meal in town.

Wanda Kiernan comes to us from Haymarket. She has been with us since early summer, 2007, and her warm smile and vivacious laugh will make you feel right at home.

DJ Cleary is also one of our staff members who is fun-loving and very patient with helping you with wine selections. DJ hails from Haymarket also and enjoys seeing how many different states are represented by our customers each weekend….

Sue Grant and Patty Maher-Wade help us on occasion, and we are so lucky to have them with us. Pleasant and people friendly, they provide excellent tastings and are helpful when it comes to helping you chose the perfect wine for your special entertaining.

We can’t leave out Mickey Holliday, who has been helping the Swedenburg family with many tasks for 3 years. We can’t thank Mickey enough for all of his support through the years. He certainly made Mrs. Swedenburg laugh on many occasions. For that we will always be grateful.

Joe Jamaldinian is our website manager. But most importantly, he is the creator and author of the Penguin Bob books which we have for sale in our tasting room. He is also an artist, so check out our links page to learn more about him.

Our Place

When the weather is warm, we have picnic tables with umbrellas for your comfort and pleasure. They are located near the tasting room so if you run out of wine, it’s easy to come in and get more! We also sell various cheeses and crackers to pair with your wine choice.

During the cooler months, and weather permitting, we have added a Chimnea so one can toast their nose and toes and is wonderful with a mug of our delicious mulled wine. Our mulled wine is a favorite this time of year. What is mulled wine? It’s made with our 2006 Pinot Noir, with added spices and sugar and warmed to make for an excellent holiday beverage. But keep in mind, this is a specialty item and will not be available year round, so get it while it lasts. We hope to have it around through January, 2008.

One of our most popular attractions is Roxy, permanent resident of Valley View Farm and greeter to all who come. Roxy, who belongs to Betty and Marc Swedenburg, is a rescue dog from A Forever Home. We’ve had her since she was a pup and she loves to spend her weekends at the winery greeting folks with her happy smile and wagging tail. She is especially appreciative when our guests are having picnics and give her a morsel or two!!!

Lastly, Betty and Marc Swedenburg are carrying on the tradition Marc’s parents created with they began the vineyard over 20 years ago. Both are graduates of Virginia Tech and are proud Hokies!!! They invite you to come and visit and have a pleasant experience while at Swedenburg.

Cheers!!
